crying in the club
2008 — Rex Orange County
ROC performed in a seated theatre venue that, at first, made me wonder if this was going to be an awkward quiet show. When we all stood up and began to sing in unison, it reminded me of what community and connection is supposed to feel like. It was a very welcome and cathartic feeling considering this was the night after the election.

chaperone — Mermaid Chunky
Mermaid Chunky opened for LCD Soundsystem. For fans of Liars and Blonde Redhead and Yo Gabba Gabba-style stage costumes.

Just for Today — Lunar Vacation
Lunar Vacation opened for Thrice and Manchester Orchestra on their anniversary tour of Beggars and Cope. LV powered through their sound issues with grace and laughter and set the tone for a fun night filled with brotherly love (more on that later).

Tell me how much much you hate my concert photography but love these finds
People Watching — Sam Fender
Reminiscent of Arcade Fire, if you’re into that sorta thing
Burning Off My Clothes — Sworn Virgins
This was playing in the holding room for LCD Soundsystem and it inspired a handful of us elder millennials to do more than just sway with our hands in our pockets waiting for the show to start
Animal — BENEE
A radio-friendly version of her usual blend of quietude and banger in a tight three minutes
Shiver — Freak Slug
A little ditty for the 80s rom com lovers out there
Like the End — James Blake
I was starting to feel like maybe I could have some hope about what was going to happen to America. Then I listened to this… 🫠
the square — piglet
If you can hang on for the full 7 minutes, you’ll be rewarded with a crescendo so good…
byob — Sabrina Sterling
Scathing review of dudes
Astral Plane — Valerie June
Wouldn’t be surprised if Valerie June cited Tracy Chapman as an influence
Heaven II — Julia Michaels
One of my absolute favorite songwriters celebrates love with her first single as an independent artist
Both Sides — The O’My’s
A simple groove that’ll fit nicely on your “I’m choppin’ veggies and need some quiet after work” playlist
BLUH BLUH BLUH — _BY.ALEXANDER
Immediately run and grab your headphones and thank me later. A sonic experience like I haven’t experienced this year since Cowboy Carter
She’s Not Shiny, She’s Not Smooth — Vanisha Gould
An affirmation song for the women not seeking perfection or humility
Don’t Walk Away — Cordae (feat. Jordan Ward & Ravyn Lenae)
The album earnestly reflects on his first year of parenthood and is stacked with features
