a little bit of this, a little bit of that

f is for friends who do stuff together
August 15 – August 22
She (feat. Kurtis Wells) — Rich Brian (Indonesia, Trinidad)
the production takes me back to sitting at a beachside johnny rockets with my cousins
Nice Shoes — Steve Lacy
mostly uk-style glitch with some soft edges
Vanity Plate — Vanity Plate
I enjoyed discovering them this weekend at Echo Park Rising. despite not being able to hear a thing due to some questionable sound setups, the frontwoman was engaging and effortlessly cool.
Lust for Life — Courting (UK)
it’s paced like a “screw you, mom!”-then-burst-out-the-house-to-run-to-my-questionable-boyfriend-that’s-gonna-break-my-heart-when-he-breaks-up-with-me-to-go-to-harvard-at-the-end-of-the-summer movie
Juracán — Dávila 666 (Puerto Rico)
basically Joy Division with an PR twist
BIG — Boyish
i’m a sucker for a good vibrato and soft singing over some in your face guitars!
Splinter — Eterna (Spain)
progressive, experimental, moody. i’m stuck between hearing Linkin Park and Radiohead’s OK Computer as production influences
Root Rot — Moselle
another Echo Park Rising discovery! I was sat at the back of the bar and could only see/hear this band from across the room while they performed on the patio. even then, I could hear the Seal & Alanis Morrisette influences
Happy — Gatlin
keepin’ it going with the nostalgic singer-songwriter energy. it’s swelling and depressing
Cards on the Table — Jay Som & Mini Trees
for fans of Japanese House and anything George Daniel’s produced
I Don’t Go Out —
there’s so much to love here. a Julia Michaels-style melody and crystal clear pop vocals similar to Astrid S circa 2016 both placed over a fun dance track that reminds me of wearing business casual to the 18+ clubs
IDONTMIND — ZEP & Moses Yoofee (Netherlands, Germany)
it starts off pretty straight forward, then you get these layers of jazz pianos and a cyclical melody that made my eyes cross and my brain vibrate
PS. HUGE thank you to fellow playlister ! she gifted us Gatlin and googly eyes — both new discoveries for me! Hannah’s playlists are a great companion to MAL, especially for fans of pop and girl power 💐
